What is Gold Vermeil? We predominantly produce our jewellery in 18k Gold Vermeil. It's different to 'gold plated', and a more affordable option than solid gold. Gold Vermeil is a very specific combination and thickness of metals. To be classed as gold vermeil, the piece must have a base of 925 sterling silver, and the thickness of the gold must be a minimum of 2.5 microns. All gold vermeil pieces are stamped with the 925 mark to indicate the sterling silver purity. A 'micron' is a term used to refer to gold plating. It might not sound like much, but jewellery with 1 micron or more is considered 'good quality'. Anything below that is considered 'flash plating', which doesn't last very long, and doesn't meet quality standards. Our jewellery uses 2.5 microns of gold, which is very high above the industry average.
-
Is your jewellery waterproof?Yes! Water does not affect or discolour our jewellery, nor cause it to rust. However, gold is a delicate metal and does not particularly like chlorine, soap, shampoo/conditioner, bleach and anything else with chemicals. Exposure to these elements over time will eventually wear away the gold plating, and expose the silver base underneath. Avoid chlorinated pools, and remove your rings before washing your hair and hands (because of the soap).
-
What can dull or erode my jewellery?Over time, swimming and showering while wearing gold-plated or silver jewellery or washing your hands with your rings on will dull your jewellery (even solid gold). Chlorine, salt water and fresh water can damage precious metals and gemstones by dulling or eroding them. Gold is particularly susceptible to damage from chlorine, chemicals, or anything bleach which can permanently damage and discolour them. Soapy water when bathing and showering can also leave a thin film, which makes the metal seem dull. Some stones can also be quite porous (such as turquoise and lapis lazuli), which is why you shouldn’t leave these kinds of stones immersed in water for too long. Liquids and oils can seep into the gems through the tiny cracks between the crystals, causing permanent discolouration and damage. In addition, porous gems should not be worn to a beach or other hot, extreme environments.
-
How should I care for my jewellery?Always store your jewellery pieces individually, preferably in your Morgan & Äya box so that they don’t rub together, scratch or tangle. Particular care should be taken with gemstones to ensure that they do not knock against one another when stored. Also remember to keep your chains fastened so they don’t become tangled. Your gold vermeil jewellery should be kept in a dark, cool and dry place. Living in a humid environment? Store your jewellery with a small packet of desiccant crystals. All our gold vermeil jewellery contains a base of 925 sterling silver, and is plated with 2.5 microns of high quality 14k or 18k gold. These materials are waterproof, hypoallergenic and won't turn your skin green or go rusty. Your jewellery is particularly susceptible to damage from the effects of chemicals present in perfume, hairspray, make-up, nail polish remover, body oils, sun tan lotion, deodorant as well as chlorine in pools. Over time, constant exposure to these elements might fade the gold, and show the silver underneath. This is more likely to occur quicker in rings, because of the natural oils on our hands and our fingers. Do not keep jewellery in direct sunlight as prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause many gemstones to fade and lose their colour. Amethyst, rose quartz, chalcedony and smokey quartz are just some of the gemstones that can become paler from exposure to sunlight.
-
How should I clean my jewellery?Clean your jewellery carefully with a soft, non-abrasive and lint-free cloth or chamois; this helps maintain or bring back its shine. Avoid using ‘dip’ polish or abrasive jewellery cleaners as these contain harsh chemicals and can destroy your jewellery over time. We do not recommend the use of any jewellery polishing cloths which have been treated with cleaners or polishing agents.
